We Exist to Serve Families at the Right Moment

Zuriat was built around one purpose — to make the passage of a family's legacy as clear, as dignified, and as considerate as it deserves to be.

Our Story

How Zuriat Came to Be

Zuriat began in 2009 in a small office along Jalan Molek, when our founding practitioner, Encik Hafizuddin Ramli, found himself sitting with a widowed client who had no idea how to begin sorting her late husband's affairs. The process that followed was more difficult than it needed to be — not because the law was unkind, but because no one had explained it to her before it mattered.

That experience shaped everything that came after. The name Zuriat — meaning descendants, or the continuing line — reflects our belief that estate matters are never only about documents. They are about ensuring that what one generation built can reach the next without unnecessary loss, dispute, or confusion.

Over the years, our practice grew steadily through referrals from families in Johor Bahru and the surrounding communities. We have assisted with wills prepared quietly over a single afternoon, and with complex multi-property estates requiring months of careful coordination. Each situation has its own weight, and we treat each accordingly.

Today, Zuriat works with three dedicated practitioners and a small administrative team. We handle inheritance matters under both Malaysian civil law and Islamic faraid principles, serving Muslim and non-Muslim families with the same attentiveness. Our office remains in Taman Molek, where we started — because proximity to the community we serve has always felt important.

Our Expertise

Inheritance Law in the Malaysian Context

Malaysian inheritance law operates across two distinct frameworks — civil law, which applies to non-Muslim citizens and permanent residents, and Islamic law, specifically faraid, which governs the distribution of a Muslim individual's estate. Zuriat works within both, which is relatively uncommon for a practice of our size.

For Muslim families, faraid sets out specific shares for defined categories of beneficiaries. It cannot be overridden by a will for assets that fall under its scope. However, tools such as hibah (lifetime gift) and trust arrangements can complement it, allowing for a degree of customisation in how a family's wealth is structured. Understanding which instruments apply — and how to use them appropriately — requires both legal knowledge and cultural sensitivity.

For non-Muslim families in Johor Bahru, the Distribution Act 1958 and the Wills Act 1959 form the primary framework. A properly drawn will is the clearest way to ensure assets reach the intended recipients without delay. Where no will exists, the courts are required to issue letters of administration before any distribution can take place.

Regardless of which framework applies, the human experience of these processes is often more demanding than the paperwork suggests. Families are frequently dealing with grief, family disagreements, and financial uncertainty at the same time as navigating legal requirements. At Zuriat, we have structured our practice to absorb as much of that administrative burden as we can, so that families can focus on what matters more.
